Presenting the funds to school Founder Khun Dalin Ruangaisoon. 26th January 2016

Sadly, Deputy Chairman and Co-founder of FSNSS Conor O’Leary is leaving Samui to take up a new position on Phuket at the end of January, he will be greatly missed. Conor was largely responsible for introducing the school and its needs to the Thai Hotels Association (Koh Samui), who as many of you will know are responsible for the now famous “Samui Midnight Run” and are ardent supporters of the new school building.

Also this means that the FSNSS committee is now very short of members and with such a crucial time ahead (construction is proceeding well towards its completion later this year) much work is needed with continued fund raising efforts. Anyone who is interested in joining us please contact Claudia Wilkinson – Secretary at

Since its formation approx. 4 years ago the “Friends” can proudly say that they have both directly and indirectly been responsible for raising around 3 Million Baht towards the construction and running costs of the Special Needs School.

We should also like to take this opportunity of explaining that besides the need for funds to build the new school ( Approx construction cost B5.5 Million ) the school itself currently has running costs of around B140K each month.

The school caters for approx. 12 – 15 students and employs six staff. Khun Dalin as Manager plus a specialist Head Teacher, Khun Bel who completed her final studies and work practice at Aberdeen University in Scotland along with two other teachers and in addition a secretary and general assistant. Their salaries amount to c B89K. Food @ B600 a day equals B12K. Rent at B17K and Social Security and Tax c B8K plus utilities and general overheads B5K. The FSNSS in conjunction with the SNS have access to the school accounts regularly and would assure all concerned that the highest standards are maintained.

Building Progress

As can be seen from the photograph, all internal and external rendering has now been completed along with the majority of the internal electrical wiring. The next stage will be for the ceilings to be finished and then the windows and doors to be fitted. If there is anyone out there who could assist with the Landscaping at a later stage it will be much appreciated.

Once again on behalf of The Samui Special Needs Foundation a huge “Thank you” to everyone  for your past help, good luck and good health for 2016 and a wish for your continued support.

David Wilkinson.

BOOTLEGGERS Bar & Restaurant “CASH FOR TASH” Success

On Sunday 29th November Jeremy Briggs and colleagues of the new BOOTLEGGER Bar & Restaurant located in Cheongmon, (opp The Baywater Resort) held an entertaining evening raising funds for The Special Needs School, the theme involving that all should arrive with a moustache, real or otherwise. An excellent turn out ensured that a hilarious time was had by all with the spontaneous “Custard Pie in the Face” auction fetching B5.000 on its own!

The event was such a success that combined with sales of the FSNSS calendar the amount raised was a staggering B23.000.

On behalf of the school we extend our sincere thanks to all involved.

Saturday the 3rd October saw enthusiastic golfers and guests gathering once again at the Royal Samui Golf and Country Club to join this year’s festivities. Arrangements were made for 14 buggies to support our members but alas only 13 were available on the day leaving two stalwart golfers to walk their way around. Well done to them!

The first prize for the overall winner donated by NIKKI BEACH of a Villa for two nights, inclusive of breakfast and was won by island visitor Mr Strob. Nearest the Pin was held over two holes and the winners were Ken Quatermass and Goran Spolen whom both received  “Dinner for two Vouchers” kindly provided by Poppies Sami.  This year our new “Putting Competition” was won by Paul Rambo who was awarded Brunch for two at Nikki Beach.

This year once more Nigel and his wife and staff worked tirelessly to provide, what was, without doubt, THE most wonderful B.B.Q. everyone present commented on how delicious and plentiful it was.

This year’s Raffle was a collection of amazing prizes. There were in fact so many generous donations and our thanks go to the following – Anantara Bophut, Silavadee Resort, Noori India, Island Hoppers, Zazen Resort, Poppies Samui, Samui Palm Beach Resort, Kimalaya,  Austrian Bar, The Expat Shop, The Cake Fairy, Mick Grover, David Robertson, The Royal Golf and Country Club and a special thanks to Alex Lester of Samui Golf School for his help in scoring and advising. My apologies to anyone I may have missed!

After lunch everyone was entertained by local Irish musicians “For Folk’s Sake” who were exuberant in their performance which as their lead guitarist Conor O’Leary (of Silavadee Resort and Spa fame) said “It gets better the more you drink – It did !! and many thanks guys, you were great.

And what an amazing day it turned out to be, not only was the weather perfect but turnout was a record with over 55 players and guests who between them raised a record THB 60.018 on behalf of the Special Needs School and many asked if we could hold the event twice a year in the future. (Rain Check)

Our sincere thanks to all management and staff at the RSGCC for making the day possible.
